The
Caribbean Feeling in south of Majorca
From Sabrina Gundert
Turquoise water, the finest white sand, palm trees and sun fully - free
does not call south of Majorca "Migjorn", the Majorcan word for noon.
Only
well two flying hours you distinguish from this paradise!
Here our top Ten...
1) By exotic beaches
relax
Of Majorca the biggest nearly unaffected sandy beach " It Trenc " is worth
as the Caribbean from next door. Eight kilometers of picture book Playa
apply from Sa Ràpita to Colònia de
Sant Jordi (Start best from Campos, big car parks in Ses Covetes in the
Nordende of the beach and with the Salines de
Llevant). The dune landscape stands under nature protection, in the bay
prosper Aleppokiefern, juniper and rosemary. You find a good infrastructure
in the section around Colònia de Sant
Jordi (parasols, beachchair distribution, showers, toilets and beach restaurants).
In the middle section lies the unofficial FKK area.
2) On salt safari
go
About 10.000 metric tons of salt are won per year in the " Salines de
Llevant " between Campos and Colònia de
Sant Jordi. By the car you can go comfortably on a small path by the 130
hectare private area with his salt lakes and glittering white salt mountains.
Bird's friends should discover the last sea saltwork of Majorca with pair
of glasses equipped, because here many rare kinds present themselves.
The method of the salt production is simple and refines at the same time:
in April the sea water on the salt fields is pumped, during the hot summer
the water interest evaporates. Back almost pure sea salt remains. Harvest
home is in September - namely already since well 2000 years. Only in 1850
" Salines de Llevant " began with the establishment
of the firm the industrial salt production. In the salt Shop " white gold
" gives ` s of Majorca in kilo bags for a few cent to buy (Ctra. Campos-Colònia
de Sant Jordi, km 10, Camino Playa d ` It
Trenc, Mo - 7 Frs - 15 o'clock). At all costs try: the new gourmet's salt
" Flor de Sal " in different taste variants (availably in delicacy shops
of Majorca or on the weekly markets in Andratx and Santanyí). Since
2003 harvest " Flor de Sal " - young entrepreneurs Katja Wöhr and
Sabine Kersten the expensive, mawkishly tasting highest position on the
salted water washbasins - she(it) contains the field 16 magnesium amount
and double calcium amount.
3) Undertake a
prehistoric excursion to the country
Family flint greets: the village " Capocorb Vell " near to Cala Pi is
one of the bedeutensten bronze-temporal megalith settlements of the western
Mediterranean. The Talaiot houses were established probably in the 14th
century v. Chr. of immigrants from the eastern Mediterranean who pursued
agriculture and cattle breeding on the island. The notion "Talaiot" calls
a trutzigen building from enormous natural stones which were piled up
in the dry brick-work on each other. Most Talaiots were 2 to three-storey
and pyramid-shaped or conically. Original population of Majorca lived
one day incidentally still in caves. Because the beautiful big Talaiot
stones were transported in the course of the centuries to the building
from new buildings, only three are in " Capocorb Vell " rounds and two
square Bronze Age houses been left - surround from smaller annexes and
sketch ruins.
4) By the savanna
walk
The desert lives - on Majorca! In the 50.000 square meter cactuses garden
of the botanic garden "Botanicactus" with Ses Salines prosper more than
400 kinds from the whole world. Under it fine specimens like the 300 one
years old " Carnegiea gigantea ", natively
in Arizona. With an expansion of altogether 150.000 square meters the
arrangement open in 1988 is one of the biggest botanic gardens of Europe.
Perhaps she disposes on top of everything even of the biggest navigable
artificial sea of the world. Biotopes with endemic plants alternate with
tropical and ariden landscapes. Also the
architecture of the garden is a show: everything is offered by shady access
galleries about artificial hills as far as original water games to the
guest what puts out a green paradise - under it Highlights like a faithful
Arab water water wheel and a Majorcan windmill with pertinent water washbasin
which is used as a fish farming.
5) Knuspertaschen
cost
Island-wide the bakery " Approx. ` n Pomar " in the main street is known
by Campos for theirs excellent "empanadas"
(with fish, meat or marmalade filled dough pockets). No miracle that the
quality on completely Majorca has gotten around: Finally, it is baked
with " Approx. ` n Pomar " already for over hundred years what holds the
stuff. Tip: If you are already in Campos, pay attention to the very imaginative
fire-places - forms from local craftsmen. Besides, worth seeing: the magnificent
coffered ceiling and the painting " El Santo Cristo dela Paciencia " from Bartolomé Esteban
Murillo in the church Sant Julià (C/. Major; you get the key with
the minister in the opposite Casa dela
Rectoria).
6) Try spicy cheese Quality in the square: " Piris " calls the Majorcan variant of the
famous quadrangular Mahón cheese of the neighbouring island Menorca.
On the farms around the agrarian center Campos the descendants of Frisian
cows, "frisons" named, milk give for the
cheese available on completely Majorca. Certainly, the "Piris" does not
taste completely as piquant as the "Mahón", but he also gives off
the popular aroma of sun-ripened herbs and sea salt. In Campos cheese
factory " format G flat Piris " about six million liters of milk are processed
annually. Fabulous 30 liters of milk are only in a 3-kilo-cheese loaf.
Near the cream cheese the about 60-year-old family business still produces
three other sorts. "Semicurado" tastes mildly and creamy - he stores only
four to five weeks. At least three months must mature "curado", so that
he gets his strong and firm edges. Brief six months need "reserva" to
develop his typical taste.
7) In the far wander
You can enjoy a breathtaking sight up to 14 kms of removed neighbouring
island Cabrera from the cliff projection Cap Blanc in the south coast
who is enthroned 80 meters about the sea. Because Cap Blanc is a military
restricted area, one finds near the lighthouse easily a place to park.
From the roadside (e.g., with km 17) these are only few steps up to rock.
Highlight for botany fans: in this region grows a slim variant of the
Aleppokiefer which is found only on the Balearic Islands (Pinus halepensisceniliae).
8) To the nature
paradise Cabrera sail
Ferryboats of the idyllic small harbour Colònia de
Sant Jordi start every morning against half past nine to the neighbouring
island Cabrera (spring till autumn; in winter only by private boats attainable).
The trip lasts a good hour. Back it is mostly in the afternoons against
four. Till there you have to get to know time, the paradisiac flora and
fauna. In 1991 Cabrera with his 18 satellite islets was explained to the
altogether 10.000 hectare national park - of the first Spain which also
encloses sea surface near country. Snorklers discover here small octopuses,
Meros, moraines and many other interesting underwater inhabitants. In
country dark lizards of the endemic kind cross " Pordarcis lilfordi
" the way. The boat excursion costs for adults about 28 Euros per person
plus in-flight meals for about six Euros. Who would like to visit the
island by own boat, needs an approval of the park administration (Tel.:
971-72 50 10, www.reservasmarinas.com).
9) Follow the traces
of the pirates The watch-tower of Cala Pi was established in 1662 to catch sight
of approaching pirates. Earlier there were altogether more than 80 "talaies"
(watch-towers) along the Majorcan coast line. Till the end of the 19th
century they formed a warning chain with smoke and fire mark. Then the
stone monuments were auctioned, many were also used as quarries. Today
been left "talaies" serve as lookout points
for tourist. Trutzige round tower of Cala Pi is well restored. However,
he can be visited only outwardly.
10) Fill up with
the whole year about sun
The south region of Majorca is called "Migjorn", this is the Majorcan
word for noon. In time, because in the warmest corner of Majorca (17 degrees
in the annual average) siesta mood always rules, actually. At no other
place of the island it is raining so rarely and so a little (only 300
to 500 mms of amount of precipitation in the annual average).
