North
of Majorca: rough charm offensive
From Verena Gemmel
Steep
limestone rocks, wild nature, measureless width: Costa of Majorca north
is a self-willed beauty which does not let manage to grab so lightly.
Who succeeds, she enchants that umso more...
1) About a gigantic
rock bar travel
A 18 km long street leads to the most northern corner of Majorca Cap Formentor
- builds on a cliff formation which towers like an enormous bar in the
middle in the sea. She(it) is a masterpiece of the Italian road construction
engineer Antonio Paretti who has also constructed the spectacular street
" Sa Calobra " (the adder) on the west coast. At the end of this monumental
rock bar a lighthouse is enthroned since 1862. With clear sight you can
recognize from this elevated position in the east Menorca, in the west
Cala Figuera and in the south Alcúdia. Only free of swindle should
venture a look downwards, because the shelving coast lies 300 meters about
the sea. Tip: windcheater take! Here rigid sweetbreads blow mostly. Insert
on the way back at all costs a coffee Päuschen at the old-respectable
hotel forms gate - the high-class hotel open in 1929 for international
VIP ` s almost already belongs to the Sightseeing program.
2) With full wind the sails place
The bays of Pollenca and Alcúdia are a paradise for water sportsman!
On the one hand because in the north the best wind relations rule - ideally
for yachtsman and surfer. For other because both Bahias lie strangely
protected: the bay of Pollenca becomes from the peninsulas a forms gate
and Sa Victòria frames, the bay of Alcúdia of Sa Victòria
and the Llevant. Tip for the lunchbreak: the little harbour place Port
de Pollenca. In the promenade there are some
nice bars, restaurants and cafés. The famous criminal author Agatha
Christie spent here incidentally in 1929 several weeks and chose Port
de Pollenca to the Setting of their(her)
love story " problem at Pollensa Bay ". It
also pulled the statesman Winston Churchill and the billionaire Aristoteles
Onassis at the most northern harbour of Majorca.
3) In stylish Fincas
dream In the north
the private sphere is especially holy. Rent to yourselves a comfortable
Finca in the middle of the nature, and leave the world behind yourselves!
The choice in exclusive domiciles is big. A new Highlight: the luxury
and Lifestyle hotel " Son
Brull ". Avant-garde design and contemporary luxury was embeded with
a lot of intuitive feeling in the historic Klostergemäuer from the
18th century. Five stars Wellness oasis with Spa area, gourmet's restaurant
and scene bar lies completely near with the golf course of Pollenca (9
holes, demanding Fairways, Ctra. Palma-Pollenca, km. 49.3, 07460 Pollenca,
Tel.: 971-533216, fax: 971-533265, www.golfpollensa.com).
4) With sea look
to gulfs(golfs)
In the end of 2003 open place(square) Alcanada is at present an absolute
Shooting star of Majorca (Ctra. del Faro
s/n, 07410 Port d ` Alcúdia, Tel.:
971-220966, fax: 971-220967, www.golf-alcanada.com).
And this not only because of the fantastic sight of the bay of Alcúdia
- 16 of 18 holes with sea look! Also the design of Robert Trent Jon Senior
and junior demands of the players a lot of headwork. It should reflect
the waves of the sea. There was designated Alcanada after the close lighthouse
which you can admire with your gulf round. It will never lack of water
Alcanada incidentally: gulf manager Kristoff Both has decided as first
on the island on the grass sort "Paspulum" which can be sprinkled with
sea water. Respect: strict Handicapregelung - ladies 36, men 33!
5) Proud aurora
borealis visit
A select circle of about 14.000 inhabitants maintains lovingly the traditions
of the beautiful historic small town Pollenca. The Pollencins how Pollencas
citizen on the island are named are considered as well-to-do and self-willedly.
They speak own dialect, celebrate their local customs and traditions with
dedication and promote the beautiful arts. About a dozen galleries have
let themselves down here. The romantically interlocked alleys and stairs
still come from the time of the Arabs. After their eviction the Knight
Templars led the regiment and created 1236 the main church " Nostra Senyora
del Angels ". Laterally of the church still
there stands the former palace of the Templer, the street name " Carrer
Temple " reminds of the mysterious medal. According to Italian model were
built from the 17th to the 19th century reddish to
okkerfarbenen quarrystone houses - most are a feast for the eyes!
Who would like to proceed on the traces of the Romans, something follows
the shields to the " Pont Romà " beyond the city: Only a bridge
about the Torrent de Sant Jordi is been left
by the Roman occupying - nevertheless, in good condition.
6) Experience an
adventurous pirate's battle
" Moros a terra " - " Moors in country! ",
roars the good Pollenciner Juan Mas horrifies from his balcony. Under
him shakes the amount which has assembled around Pollencas landmarks "
Font de Gall " (cock fountain). The racket
begins annually on the 2nd August about 19 o'clock with this cry " Moros
i Cristians ". The historic battle of 1550 is played against the gang
of the Turkish pirate's king Dragut. The brave Pollencins fight in white
sleep garments, because at night the attack occurred. They celebrate their
victory cheerfully till the early morning hours. Instead of blood flows
every amount Mesclat - an urmallorquinischer black alcoholic drink. At
midnight a big firework is lit.
7) Get to know
mystic side of Majorca
If you are in the Easter holidays on Majorca, you should look at all costs
in the Good Friday the Descent from the Cross procession (Davallament)
in Pollencas Calvary (Puig de Calvari)! About
evening all oil lamps are lit along the 365-stage stair. At the top on
the forecourt to the chapel two Pollencins dressed up as a Roman guard
an enormous crucifix. From this plateau at 170-meter height you have incidentally
a fantastic look at the city and the bay of Pollenca. The procession -
a sea of lights from torches and lanterns begins with burglary of the
darkness. From wrapped up penitents with have an eye to hats (Nazarenos)
accompanied, Christ Statü wrapped in a black top cloth is carried
up and down steps in the church " Nostra Senyora dels
Angels ". There the municipality celebrates a midnight mass. Very impressively
the Pollencins also set their(her) Corpus Christi procession (body Cristi)
in June in scene. Two girls in sumptuous eagle costumes (àguiles)
which carry the most expensive jewellery of the local inhabitants dance
before the altar and pull all looks at themselves. The eagle is a heraldic
animal of the webers. Their guild sponsored the procession in the Middle
Ages.
8) By lonely nature
paradise walk Vertically from the sea towering cliff faces, shady stone oak forests,
earthy Olivenbaumhaine: the northern Tramuntana mountains open grand and
idyllic panoramic looks! From Pollenca you should at all costs to Klosterberg
" Puig de Maria " (about 30 Min) and to the
castle ruin " Castell del Rei " walk (about
3 Saint; respect: a part is a private road of the Finca Ternelles! Before
with the tourist Info after possible times inquire). From Port de
Pollenca a beautiful short footpath by the Bóquer valley to the
lookout point leads " Mirador d ` Colomer " (about 2 Saint; start at the
eastern local end). You can undertake a wonderful round footpath on Alcúdias
peninsula Sa Victòria. Uniquely the nature reserve "S'Albufera"
in the bay of Alcúdia - with 1.700 hectares is the biggest damp
area of the Balearic Islands! Approximately 200 bird kinds live in the
park, about 10.000 migratory birds from Africa and Northern Europe rest
here. In addition, there is every amount of amphibians, eels, spirit levels
and magnificent marsh orchids. From the reed-hemmed Travelling and cycle
tracks you have the shy park inhabitants very well in the look without
disturbing their(her) life (entrance in the bridge " Pont dels
Anglesos ", Ctra. Alcúdia-Can Picafort). In the nature protection
centre and information centre you get pamphlets, a map of the area as
well as pairs of glasses (against a rental fee).
9) Traces of the
Arabs and Romans discover
" The hill " calls on Arab "Al-Kudia". On such the Moors established their(her)
island capital, after they had conquered Majorca 903. Still today the
historic small country town "Alcúdia" carries the Arab name, only
the manner of writing changed a little. His(its) currently about 6000
inhabitants a powerful medieval city wall frames - 1298 of Jaume II begun
and around 1660 of Philip IV extends. As a stone supplier the abandoned
Roman settlement Pollentia served below the city. Here the Arabs already
found their(her) building material. Luckily, all stones were not carried
off about the centuries: Pollentia is the Roman main discovery site of
the island, although only some pillars and the foundation walls of the
Casa dela Portella
stand (opposite the parish church, Ctra. Port d ` Alcúdia). Only
the foundation walls are also got by the smallest amphitheater of Spain,
the Teatre Romà, (Ctra. Port d ` Alcúdia, km 54). the "
Museu Monogràfic de Pollentia " helps
your imagination: on the bases of the model of a Roman house you can introduce
yourselves the former Pollentia better (C/. Sant Jaume, 30; behind the
parish church).
10) To classic
sounds listen Pollencas international music weeks (festival de

a stylish frame created in the early-baroque 1578. Mostly the virtuosoes(virtuosos)
